Julie Cloutier

Opening Friday, March 26th, 6-9pm The Jancar Jones Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibit of the work of Los Angeles-based artist Claire Nereim and San Francisco-based artist Julie Cloutier. The exhibit will include new work by both artists as well as one collaborative piece by the two. In her work, Claire Nereim explores the relationship between form and meaning as it pertains to the construction of memory and space and in particular, in the points of tension between interrelated opposing states (material and immaterial, order and entropy, surface and depth). Her process involves the collection and organization of information using both intuition and research. She searches for ways to unravel the seams that tie form to meaning. Although her focus is often on failures of communication, the limitations of consciousness and intersubjectivity, she relishes the creative possibilities and endless potential of shifting meanings, the materiality of language and the coincidences and inexplicable relationships that result. Her fascination with visual semiotics extends to gestures, colors, codes, and signals, which she examines through the systems of drawing and handwriting, letterforms, words, flags, calendars, maps and tableaux. Julie Cloutier’s work responds to perceptual, spatial, and social disruptions, exposing altered relationships within the landscape of the everyday. She experiments with drawing through the use of letters, lines, site-specific installations and architectural conventions to construct a visual language. Her site-specific installations confront existing site conditions to heighten an awareness of overlooked networks within everyday environments. Office items are re-aligned through translation, scaled Square Footage drawings of the gallery are drawn directly onto its walls to re-present the actual horizontal space of exhibition, and in both cases the result is a shifted legibility of sign, form and space. Nereim is a 2011 MFA candidate at California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. She received a Bachelor's degree in Visual Art from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. Cloutier received a Master’s degree in Architecture from California College of the Arts, San Francisco and received a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from Colorado University at Boulder. She currently is an Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Cloutier and Nereim have worked together since 2007, after meeting in a typography class.
