Artists Reception: Thursday, April 1st, 2010 with performance by Inca Ore
Textie Textie is a show of recent paintings by Gaby Wolodarski. A chaos of signs, emptiness and bits of information which travels across landscapes of varying abstraction, winking, thinking, and gelling into meditative, luminous stillness.
To this end sometimes paint is paint, and then sometimes paint is a trick of the eye. The ontological distance between paint's splotchy, scratchy paint-ness and paint's momentary transformation into a distinct "vision" --a plastic bottle, a mountain in the distance-- is the trajectory from prosaic to sublime. It's also the inverse. Two-dimensional representation is magic: take paint, see white rabbit. But also meditation: take white rabbit, be standing in front of oil painting.
Gaby Wolodarski is an Oakland-based artist working with paint, sculpture, installation and video. She also builds sets for theater. She has shown locally at the DiRosa Preserve, Lobot Gallery, Southern Exposure, Mission 17, and the Yerba Buena Center, as well as at Sacramento, Portland and Chicago art spaces and galleries.
"I'm interested in paint's ability to arrest space-time. My aim is to crystallize its implacable forward motion, to distill its formation within human consciousness. My process is not experimental -- experiment is methodical. My procedure is intuitive above all. My inspiration comes from daydreams and night-dreams. I do not intend to be discursive, or even clear, though i find myself using semantic promise and moments of visual clarity to murky ends." - Gaby Wolodarski
