Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series: Loren HollandPost an Event »

Exploiting mainstream media's hypersecualized and self-assured images of femininity, Loren Holland's oil paintings on paper depict highly enigmatic female figures. By distorting the usual connotations of these images, her brightly colored works examine themes of depravity and the ways in which hedonistic excess can issue in new forms of epistemic purchase. Her wry, carefully coordinated use of incongruent emblems from modern culture--including guns, baby bottles, handcuffs, discarded fried chicken, and tarot cards--results in an unnerving world suffused with symbolism and allegorical import. She has produced solo projects at the California African American Museum (2009) in Los Angeles and the Santa Monica Museum of Art (2007), and solo-exhibition galleries include Anna Kustera in New York City. She has participated in numberous group exhibitions, including such venues as the Oakland Museum of California. Holland earned an MFA in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University and currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
