The SFMOMA Artists Gallery announced a special 3-day show welcoming back the SF Fine Art Fair featuring work by Don Ed Hardy, James Torlakson, Lewis Watts, Steve Allen, E.G. Crichton, Kirk Crippens, Laura Dufort, John Yoyogi Fortes, England Hidalgo, Terry Hoff, Misako Inaoka, Robert Ogata, and Adrienne Pao. Don Ed Hardy's mixed media works are made of cast resin and stacked with vintage Hardy celluloid tattoo stencils making a three-dimensional kaleidoscopic reference to 60s Pop Art and surf-board making, early and seminal influences on Hardy. This show includes a unique piece entitled “Go Go Goya,” a hand painted boogie board cast in resin that juxtaposes the Spanish painter and printmaker’s self-portrait on one side with an ominous looking primate icon on the other. James Torlakson is best known for photo-based realism, though working from life is still an active part of his creative process. His imagery has centered on “everyday” America; shifting over the years from trucks, to railways, to amusement parks, to waterfronts, to fireworks booths, to deserted drive-in theatres, to coastal landscapes. Through these shifts in subject matter, related architecture has been a steadily repeated motif. Lewis Watts' research and artwork centers on the photography of African American cultural landscapes, where people live, how they occupy and use space, and the traces they leave behind. He is interested in the cultural roots of architecture and both the intentional and unintentional manipulation of space. E.G. Crichton uses a range of art strategies to explore social issues, history, and site-specific subject matter. She often works within community settings and collaborates across disciplines with performers, writers, scientists and composers, to name a few. Her work has been exhibited in art institutions and as public installations in Europe, Japan, Australia and across the U.S. She is an Associate Professor of Art at UC Santa Cruz and currently the first Artist-in-Residence for the GLBT Historical Society. SFMOMA Artists Gallery offers a diverse selection of original artwork by Bay Area Artists. The SFMOMA Artists Gallery is located in Building A at Fort Mason Center. Gallery hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission to gallery exhibitions is free of charge.
