Stripped "Grove"
Opening Reception: Friday, June 18th, 6-9 PM. Exhibition Hours: Saturday, June 19th, 11AM to 6PM. Todd Laby presents Stripped, an exhibition of sculptures featuring his recent plywood creations at Mina Dresden Gallery. Stripped is Laby’s exploration of the void between depletion and life. Through his sculptures he is presenting the futility of trying to bring organic material back to life once it has been destroyed. Though he attempts to return a sense of nature, motion and beauty to the material, he believes it is not possible to return its soul. That failure is the point of the work. It is a comment on our use of resources. He uses cut strips of plywood in a repeating pattern, each piece, slightly different, to create three-dimensional shapes that evoke motion and life. The pieces approximate that life and can never attain it again. Laby expresses this approximation by using a material, plywood, whose soul has been stripped, glued, pressed into submission and cut into uniformity. There is no going back. These pieces, no matter how graceful, or moving, are impostors. To see more of Todd's work, please visit www.toddlaby.com
