Kala’s Fellowship program includes a series of artists’ talks by our current Fellows. Over the next several months, each of the eight artists will give a brief presentation of their work and discuss their current residency projects at Kala. On Wednesday, May 7 at 7:00 pm. Kala will host the first in our 2008 series of gallery talks with presentations by Fellowship Artists Malcolm T. Smith and Petra Vargova.
Malcolm T. Smith is a self-described mediatic performance and installation artist. Malcolm’s performances lie in the borderlines of magic and trickery, theater and ritual, where the stage becomes the transducer. Malcolm presented an engaging one-night performance event at the Kala Gallery in February that involved video and abandoned technologies. In July, he will be presenting a week-long installation/performance series in the Kala Gallery as his Fellowship exhibition. Prior to joining Kala as a Fellowship artist, Malcolm received his MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers University. His work has been presented in numerous international video and performance festivals in addition to gallery exhibitions throughout the United States, South America and Europe. Malcolm received a prestigious Fulbright Award that included a 2005-2006 theater residency in Bogotá, Columbia.

Petra Vargova’s conceptual works employ sophisticated new media technologies such as virtual reality, PlayStation game technology and audio-kinetic objects. Her installations reflect an interest in natural forces such as air, temperature and sound, coupled with an exploration of human perception. Petra holds multiple degrees in both fine arts and new media practices. In 2006 she received a Master of Science degree from the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. Her work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in Europe including solo exhibitions in Gothenburg, Sweden; Brest, France; and Prague, Czech Republic. Her work will be seen in the first of our Residency Projects exhibitions this summer. Petra will soon be returning to her home in Prague, so don’t miss this chance to learn more about her work.
