QUALITY presents 40$ec by YeRin Kim, an installation of paintings and sculptures depicting the artist’s view of today’s economic and social structure created by power.
Dehumanization starts from me inwards and goes in many different directions. It started when I see myself as a woman of size eight instead of size six. It continues when I passed by “Help” written on a piece of cardboard when Facebook asks me to agree to something that I have no way of negotiating or understanding. And it comes back to me when I blame myself for feeling helpless, powerless, and frustrated.
YeRin Kim, born and raised in South Korea, moved to the United States 2006, earning her BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art and later an MFA at California College of the Arts. YeRin is one of many ‘for-education’ immigrants from South Korea. With its highly competitive society, South Korea has the most study abroad students per capita in the world. Like many of those students, YeRin was sent to the United States at age 19 to attend a university. For the past decade, YeRin has worked with the themes of coexistence and interdependence. Her work often uses tactical installations that are interactive to viewers. YeRin also co-founded Nomad Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland which brought art to less privileged areas, and presented non-commercial artists. YeRin is currently a founding member of the all women’s art collective, CTRLSHFT, in Oakland, California.
