Drawing from Another Dimension
Location: View 155 The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery is pleased to present, Drawing from Another Dimension an installation by Bay Area artist Paul Hayes in our Grove Street window installation site. A raw storefront located in the heart of the Civic Center, the Grove Street window installation site is a project space that provides artists with the opportunity to create experimental and site-specific installations. For Drawing from Another Dimension, Hayes continues work on a theme that he has been exploring for the past few years—to create installations that use line, form and mass as one would in a drawing. The result is reminiscent of a cluster of molecules, a flock of birds or any other aggregation that is made up of small seemingly identical parts. The site-specific installation for the Grove Street Windows will consist of a vast cascade of crumpled and folded pieces of paper suspended on strands of wire that extend beyond the project space and into the rear of the building. In his artist statement Hayes states: "I'd like to give people a completely new experience of the existing architecture. As inspiration for a piece I can begin with a certain experience of the natural world (for example, what it feels like to sit beneath a tree and see the way sunlight filters through) and design it further or use an aspect of it to make something I've never seen before." Despite using simple typing paper, a material often associated with mundane connotations, the work embodies natural beauty through sequence and form. While the material represents the omnipresent bureaucracy of our modern world, the way it is used suggests an alternative to it.
