The SFMOMA Artists Gallery’s Windows venue will show the work of Oakland-based artist Jesse Hazelip from July 10 – November 13, 2010. The artist will give a talk about his work on Saturday, August 21 starting at 2 p.m. at SFMOMA Artists Gallery in Fort Mason. Hazelip has both street artist “cred” as well as a BFA from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His large-scale murals on boarded up buildings in the East Bay are much admired until they are summarily painted over by graffiti abatement squads. Of late, Hazelip has no trouble finding authorized venues for his work, such as the SFMOMA windows and Justin Giarla’s White Walls gallery in the Tenderloin. For these indoor sites he uses reclaimed materials. The found objects lead him in interesting directions such as a discarded hotel sign that serves as the base for the painting “Odin” and signifies temporary habitation. His hybrids consist of iconic American animal forms such as the bison, the Great Blue heron and WWII bombers and artillery. Specific references are made to the B-29s that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan as well as the ironic practice of naming the war planes after mothers and sweethearts. Stenciled on the panels are numbers such as “509th,” an Air Force bomber designation, and words like “Fat Man,” the nickname for the nuclear weapon detonated over Nagasaki -- all military short hand for destruction. Hazelip’s work will also be included in the exhibition Wondrous Strange: A Twenty-first-century Cabinet of Curiosities on view at Fort Mason Center July 22 thru August 28. The SFMOMA Artists Gallery located at Fort Mason Center organizes the Windows Program. It uses the SFMOMA Garage’s street-level windows located at 150 Natoma and 147 Minna Street (Between Third and New Montgomery Sts.) to showcase artwork. The program, organized by Renée de Cossio of the Artists Gallery, invites some of the areas’ most ambitious artists to transform these everyday spaces into compelling exhibitions that passersby can view round the clock. Hazelip’s installation will be up from July 10 – November 13, 2010 and can be seen from the street 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Representing Northern California artists, the SFMOMA Artists Gallery offers a diverse selection of original artwork for sale and rent. The SFMOMA Artists Gallery is located in Building A at Fort Mason Center. Gallery hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission to gallery exhibitions is free of charge.
