Wiesenfeld Visiting Artist Lecture Series: James LunaPost an Event »

Among the preeminent Native American artists of his generation, James Luna is a Luiseño Indian who conveys the tensions and animosities created by cultural isolation and misinterpretation through live performance. For three decades, he has confronted the redundancies of a hypocritical dominant society with thoughtfulness and humor. Luna has exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, DC (2010); the 51st Venice Biennale (2005); and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2001), among other prominent venues. He is the recipient of many grants and awards including a Creative Capital Grant (2002); a Japan/US Creative Artist Exchange Fellowship (2001) and a Rockefeller Foundation Grant (1992). James Luna holds a BA in Studio Art from the University of California at Irvine, and an MSc in Counseling from San Diego State University. He lives on the LaJolla Indian Reservation. The Wiesenfeld Visiting Artist Lecture Series is sponsored by the The Betsey Straub Wiesenfeld Visiting Artist Endowment, The Bonwitt – Heine Memorial Lecture Endowment and the UC Berkeley Department of Art Practice.
