Peripheral Vision:  Photographs Without Pictures Artist Klea McKenna. Detail of "Paper Airplanes."
Togonon Gallery is pleased to present Peripheral Vision: Photographs Without Pictures, an exhibition that brings together new work by Klea McKenna, Rebecca Nadjowski, and Jessica Skloven. These three artists are producing experiments in perception and viewing. They employ photography’s relationship to the optical and its ability to refer to the experience of vision, rather than to tenable subjects. Each of these artists works within a structure of material limitations (i.e. using rapidly disappearing analog materials, building lensless handmade cameras, pointing the camera at illusive subjects, or constructing images in the space of the darkroom). Within these parameters alchemy takes place and the resulting photographs exist simultaneously as images and as objects. These works call attention to the photographs own physicality and to our ability to perceive the unfamiliar. The works in this exhibition reroute the common definition of abstraction and point in a direction that is introspective, personal, and highly material.
