Disponible - A kind of Mexican show
The San Francisco Art Institute presents "Disponible – a kind of Mexican exhibition" at the Walter and McBean Galleries Opening reception: Thursday, Nov. 18, 5:30-7:30. Regular gallery hours Tuesday-Saturday 11-6 Co-curated by SFAI’s Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs Hou Hanru and by Guillermo Santamarina, an independent curator based in Mexico City, this exhibition takes its name from the empty advertisement billboards reading "disponible" that are seen over the skyline across Mexican cities. Meaning at once available and changeable or disposable, the word interestingly reflects the reality of Mexican society in transition from post-colonial revolution to its current negotiation with globalization. The show, phase 1 of a 2-part exhibit to be continued in February, features video and installation work by Edgardo Aragón, Manuel Rocha Iturbide, Mauricio Limon and Hector Zamora. It frames two major tendencies in the current creative scene—social critique and witty design solutions—as strategies developed in response and resistance to the complexities of life in modern Mexico. Free and open to the public. A lecture by co-curator Guillermo Santamarina follows the opening reception, at 7:30.
