Kala Fellowship Talk: Taraneh Hemami and Bayeté Ross Smith
Kala’s Fellowship program includes a series of artists’ talks by our current Fellows. Over the next several months, each of the eight artists will give a brief presentation of their work and discuss their current residency projects at Kala. On Wednesday, June 25 at 7:00 pm. Kala will host the second in our series of gallery talks with presentations by current Fellowship Artists Taraneh Hemami and Bayeté Ross Smith. The work of Iranian-born artist Taraneh Hemami explores issues of cultural identity, preservation, migration and assimilation based on collective histories from members of the Iranian Diaspora. Taraneh’s process of creative dialogue has spawned an archive of images and stories, resulting in numerous multimedia installations and exhibitions. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants and residencies. Her work has been widely exhibited including a recent solo exhibition in the Bay Area at Intersection for the Arts and a residency project at The Lab. Taraneh will be involved in a curatorial project featured in Bay Area Now 5 opening next month at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She is also a lecturer at California College of the Arts. Taraneh’s website:http://www.hallofreflections.com/taraneh/index.jsp Bayeté Ross Smith utilizes the photographic medium as a means to investigate societal, racial and cultural stereotyping. Bayeté presents portraits that blend and blur our own preconceptions and prejudices, as we tend to visually typecast and categorize each individual presented for our scrutiny. Bayeté received his MFA in Photography from California College for the Arts. His work has been recently presented at San Francisco City Hall, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the Richmond Art Center and the de Saisset Museum. He is also a member of the Cause Collective, recipients of a recent commission at the Oakland International Airport. His work is currently on view in the Kala Gallery in Residency Projects I.
