Important Projects is pleased to present "Dancing to Make Another Dance", a performance by Millie Kapp.
Over the course of three hours, 7 pairs of participants take turns learning and teaching a short dance. The performance is continuously built by each participant’s succeeding attempt to imitate the last and the repetition of task reveals the particularities of each participant. The dancers are both the subjects and objects of the performance; they simultaneously author and enact imitations. Their continuous imitation produces a visible history, an index of concurrent similarity and transformation.
“I call it the Mimetic Faculty, the nature that culture uses to create second nature, the faculty to copy, imitate, make models, explore difference, yield into and become other.”
– Michael Taussig, Mimesis and Alterity
“Any one doing something and standing is one doing something and standing. Any one doing something and standing is one who is standing and doing something. Some one was doing something and was standing. That one was doing something standing.”
- Gertrude Stein
