Feeding Ghosts
What does it mean to be haunted? By ghosts, by memories, by the past? Does that which haunts us, refuse to die? Or is it we who imbue it with life? The artists included in Feeding Ghosts have created work that is informed by repeated returns to the spaces, both physical and psychic, which embody origins of loss. They bend time by drawing memories out of past tense and into present, making apparitions tangible once again. Some of the work serves as memorials to the unsalvagable past while other work attempts to exorcise these phantoms. Recent works by: Hilary Schwartz Mara Baldwin Tania de Rozario Stephanie Inagaki Ann Kirchner Erica Lai Hazel Lim Lynn Lu Hilary Schwartz is a sculptor engaged with concepts of domesticity, displacement, temporality, and queer desire. She received her MFA in 2009 from San Francisco Art Institute and her BFA from California College of the Arts. She has exhibited nationally. Most recently, her work has been seen in Invisible Homes at SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco, The Polemics of Love at Conrad Wilde Gallery in Tucson, and Home is Something I Carry With Me at 951 Shotwell Street in San Francisco. Hilary’s work has been featured online on KQED, Art Practical, and SFgate. She is currently collaborating with Singaporean artist, Tania De Rozario, on an upcoming show that will be exhibited both in Singapore and the U.S. www.hilaryschwartz.com Mara Baldwin’s studio practice focuses on the imagery of domestic interiors in pursuit of the historical narratives built into their arrangement. These projects have been informed by extensive research into the concepts of ‘longing’ and ‘haunting’ in American history. But how does one render a ghost (“the floating, white-clad, luminous form…the substance of dreams”)? If the haunting can be understood as a metaphor for memory, then the ghost story provides the script of how to remember. Heather Love affirms the powerful role of storytelling when writing “history— like the future—is a medium for dreaming about the transformation of social life… [T]hey are wild dreams, desires so powerful that they disrupt the linear temporality of progressive history (133).” Founded in the immigrant longing for identity, American hauntings exemplify a longing for belonging to an American dream, a dream as transient as ghost itself. www.grayandgrey.blogspot.com Tania De Rozario is an artist and writer whose work deals with issues of gender, sexuality, and desire. She has written for local and regional publications, and has received various awards including the National Arts Council's International Development Grant. Her most recent creative ventures took her to Amsterdam where she curated and exhibited in a show inspired by the literary works of Sappho, as well as to the Substation, where she curated a multidisciplinary exhibition of featuring the works of 18 emerging and established female artists. Her poetry and prose can be found on the Santa Fe Writers Project journal as well as the Quarterly Literary Review Singapore. She teaches Contemporary Contextual Studies at LASALLE College of the Arts. Stephanie Inagaki’s sculpture and drawing relies on the essential evocative qualities of bodily elements such as skin, bones, and hair, pushing the physical into a realm of psychological space. She currently works and resides in California. www.stephanieinagaki.com In 2004, Ann Kirchner received an Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship to attend the Yale University Summer School of Art, and she graduated from Boston University with a BA in English and a BFA in Painting in 2005.
