T_XT_RT Cody Hoyt, WKRP, 2008, graphite, gouache, colored pencil, acrylic on paper, 23 x 30 inches
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 13, 5:30 – 7:30pm Jenkins Johnson Gallery is pleased to announce T_XT_RT, an exhibition which examines the relationship between text and art. Focusing on visual artwork which incorporates text, the exhibition will also be accompanied by a reading at the gallery of Bay Area poets and writers. Visual artists featured include Jeremy Bert, Samantha Boudrot, Brian Dettmer, Tim Etchells, Ariel Goldberg, Claudia Goulette, Cody Hoyt, Glenn Ligon, Jack Pierson, and Jessica Rankin, among others. Based in performance and fiction, Tim Etchells’ work involves the deconstruction of language and the implication of events unfolding in time. His recent time-based accumulating installation, Red Sky at Night, consists of four helium balloons, dangling the letters H-O-P-E, floating on the ceiling. The balloons de-inflate and new balloons are re-installed daily. Beginning as a clean minimalist statement, the installation becomes chaotic and sprawling throughout the duration of the exhibition. Etchells is currently the Legacy: Thinker in Residence at Tate Research and LADA in London. His work has been exhibited at Tate Liverpool; Gotenburg International Biennale; CASM, Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona; MACBA, Barcelona; Künstlerhaus Bremen; Netherlands Media Art Institute, Amsterdam; Sparwasser HQ, Berlin; ArtFutures, Bloomberg SPACE, London; The Centre for Book Arts, Canada; Exit Art, New York; and Manifesta 7, Rovereto, Italy. From 2004 through 2007 Etchells was a Creative Research Fellow at Lancaster University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2007 by Dartington College of Arts, in recognition of his writing about contemporary performance which includes his book, Certain Fragments, Routlege 1999, documenting and theorizing his work with Forced Entertainment, a highly acclaimed group of six performance artists in Sheffield, UK. Inspired by technology and communication, Cody Hoyt’s manic graphite and gouche works of exploding mangled letters confound space in detailed layered compositions. Hoyt compiles ideas from library books incorporating imagery referential of graffiti, comic books, and digital animation. Based in L.A., Hoyt was educated at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston and Akademie Voor Beeldende Kunst, Enschede, Netherlands. Recipient of the Master Print Award from MCA, Boston, his work has been included in the Helsinki Biennale, Design Museum Helsinki; Boston Printmakers North American Print Biennial; and Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery, Carolina Coastal University; among others, and has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Home Concepts Magazine, Digital Temple Magazine, and Computer Arts Magazine, China. Ariel Goldberg’s newest performance and installation accompaniment to her epistolary poetic novel is a continuation of her recent project as a 2010 Artist in Resident at Headlands Center for the Arts, The Photographer without a Camera. Goldberg earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in Photography and Imaging in 2005 and her Master of Fine Arts from Mills College in 2009. Her work has been featured at Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco; The LAB, San Francisco; New York University, Gulf and Western Gallery, New York; The Reitz Gallery, University of Florida, Gainesville; Katzen Museum, Washington DC; and The Bronfman Center, New York; among others. Goldberg’s work has been published by NoNo Press and Trafficker Press and is included in With plus Stand, Journal of Contemporary Poetics; Try!, Bay Area literary arts magazine; Jacket Magazine; Digital Artifact, and P-Queue Volume 5, Annual Journal of Poetry and Poetics. Jenkins Johnson Gallery continues to exhibit artwork that offers a new point of view on culture and society. T_XT_RT runs from January 13 – February 22, 2011. Jenkins Johnson Gallery established 1996; Member of San Francisco Art Dealers Association.
