After too long a hiatus, we are honored to bring Dennis Leon's sculpture and drawings back to the present, where they rightly belong. For this exhibition, co-curator, Christin Nelson and I decided to bring two bodies of drawings together, Dedicated to my Father (1984), and Thicket's (1994), along with wood and bronze sculpture from the same time frame. Although some years separate the making of these drawings, they coalesce into a powerful, reflective exhibition. DENNIS LEON, born in London, England, was Professor and Chair of the Sculpture Department at the California College of Arts and Crafts from 1972 to 1988. He retired Professor Emeritus in 1992, and in the following year received a Distinguished Faculty Award and Honorary Doctorate. His drawings and sculpture are included in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; and the Storm King Art Center, New York, among others. Honors include a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Beginning in the late 1950’s Leon exhibited frequently in museums and galleries, including numerous one-person exhibitions at the Kraushaar Gallery in New York, as well as the Fuller Goldeen Gallery, Cheryl Haines Gallery, and Paule Anglim Gallery in San Francisco. It is with great pleasure we present Bay Area Artist, Charles Eckart. His exhibition will include seven oil paintings of various sizes. Each work is an abstracted landscape, lavishly painted with a palette knife and brush. The impasto surface is redolent of the trees and flowers of the environment that surrounds his home in Point Reyes. Charles was the recipient of the Phelan Award Competition is 1965, 67 & 69. He has had exhibtions at Allan Stone Gallery in New York and Hansen- Fuller Gallery in San Francisco before beginning a long lasting relationship with Charles Campbell who supported his work for over 20 years.
