The Hofmann Years
The thirty drawings in “Mercedes Matter: the Hofmann Years” date from 1938 when Matter studied with Hans Hofmann at the Art Students League and at his summer school in Gloucester, Massachusetts. In addition to being Hofmann’s student Matter was a close friend. She was influenced by Hofmann’s theories and approaches to abstraction throughout her life. The exhibition also features a compositional study from 1930 by Hofmann that demonstrates his approach to teaching and illuminates the Matter drawings in the exhibition.
