White Walls is pleased to announce Linear Empires, a group exhibition addressing the convergence of fine art and design. Linear Empires will showcase artists working across various mediums, yet united in their pursuit of organizing “visual concepts” such as delineation, color blocking, texture, contrast, geometry and line. Featured artists include Augustine Kofie, Geoff Campen, Diana Campen, Mary Iverson, Richard Pearse, Monelyess, Brendan Monroe and Gregory Ito. The opening reception for Linear Empires will be held at White Walls on Saturday, February 12 from 7-11pm. The exhibition will be on display through March 5, 2011 and is free and open to the public. Linear Empires seeks to highlight visually compelling aspects of design within a fine art context by bringing together an exciting group of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists who all showcase facets of design within their work. Mary Iverson uses the contrast of rectangular shipping containers with the dynamic curves of the natural landscape to speak to the way in which private industry has changed our visual relationship to nature. Her canvases are transparently divided by lines generating from different locations on the picture plane, bringing new meaning to the idea of multiple point perspective. In his installation pieces, Moneyless reconfigures three dimensional space by dividing it into geometrical shapes with straight clean lines of yarn or string resulting in angular, spatially organized webs. LA-based artist, Augustine Kofie creates works of intense detail centered on the order of balance. His “drafted” art is inspired by modern architecture as well as the form and shape of typography. Modern notions of design will be further explored in the work of Geoff Campen, Diana Campen, Richar Pearse, Brendan Monroe, and Gregory Ito. White Walls Gallery is the premiere destination for urban art. Combined with the Shooting Gallery just next door, this 4,000 sq ft space is one of the largest art galleries on the West Coast. Justin Giarla founded the gallery in 2005 with a commitment to furthering the urban art movement that stems from street art and graffiti art. Named for its plain white walls, we take a backseat to the real focus: the art. (And yes, we have white walls).
