An oration by Father Bertie Pearson within Nina Beier’s “What Follows Will Follow II”
A Message to the Congregation, Please join us this Saturday at 2:00pm in Gallery 3 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for a special event, presented as part of Nina Beier's solo exhibition, What Follows Will Follow II: AN ORATION BY FATHER BERTIE PEARSON, Priest of the Episcopal Church In conclusion of What Follows Will Follow II, Father Bertie Pearson will speak the final verse in fulfillment of "Explanations," a work by Berlin-based, Danish artist Nina Beier. As interpretive copy-writers, independent curators Chris Fitzpatrick & Post Brothers have delivered a series of readings and demonstrations from a lectern Beier designed. Yet where Fitzpatrick and Post have offered a lattice of "dislocated footnotes" through three presentations since December, this Saturday afternoon, Father Pearson will provide an enthralling theological and philosophical oration of a very different sort. This is simply not to be missed. Yours Eternally, Chris Fitzpatrick & Post Brothers Yerba Buena Center for the Arts 701 Mission Street (at Third Street), San Francisco, CA http://www.ybca.org/ ------- PAUSE: Practice and Exchange Nina Beier: What Follows With Follow II December 3rd, 2010 – January 23rd, 2011 ------- "Through creating situations with a simple set of instructions, the artists play with social customs and allow instinctive human reactions to be observed in their plainest form." - M+R Gallery, London "The work often takes the form of simple instructions, at once precise and open to interpretation, that aim to subtly shift the ways in which viewers intuitively engage with each other within a specific context." - YBCA, San Francisco "Each project seemingly starts with a simple set of instructions, however, a rich and multifaceted set of questions arise, it seems the end result can never truly be predicted — by the artists, the collaborators or the spectators." - Mousse Magazine, Italy "With staged events as well as videos, photographs and sculptures, Beier and Lund tinker with social hierarchies and group dynamics. They often start by issuing a simple set of instructions that participants — both collaborators and audience members — are free to interpret." - ICA, London "With staged events as well as videos, photographs and sculptures, Beier and Lund tinker with social hierarchies and group dynamics, often beginning with a simple set of instructions that participants — both gallery staff and audience members — are free to interpret." - The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis "Most notably apparent also, is that their work — albeit induced in and spanning various forms of media — often operates as an instruction, a set of rules that form the work and allow it to take place in a number of venues, but always never devoid of a sense of situational and site intent." - Present Future, Turin "Their work often takes the form of simple instructions, at once precise and open to interpretation, that aim to subtly shift — over time through an accumulation, or as a result of a seemingly spontaneous event — the ways in which viewers intuitively engage within a specific context." - Artists Pension Trust, London "En créant des situations grâce à un simple dispositif d’instructions, les artistes jouent avec les habitudes sociales et permettent l’observation de relations humaines instinctives dans leur forme la plus simple." - Betonsalon, Paris "Their works are often site-specific, and adapt to the exhibition context. Thus, for example, very simple instructions to the public or the institution can lead to an involvement of the various actors." - Kunsthaus Glarus "Their work is characterized by its attention to the formal qualities of early 1970’s performance, video and sculptural practices, in particular the simple sets of instructions for participants to follow." - Laura Bartlett Gallery, London "As often is the case in their work, a simple instruction leads to an action that in turn leaves behind certain traces." - Croy Nielsen, Berlin "By giving simple instructions to friends, museum visitors or people on the street, they challenge our habits and attitudes." - U-turn Quadrennial, Copenhagen "Through creating situations with a simple set of instructions, the artists play with social customs and allow instinctive human reactions to be ob- served in their plainest form." - The Drawing Room, London "The work is characterized by attention to the formal qualities of early 1970s performance, video and sculptural practices, in particular the simple, sometimes simplistic, instructions for participants to perform sets of instructions." - 176, London "Through creating situations with a simple set of instructions, the artists play with social customs and allow instinctive human reactions to be ob- served in their plainest form." - Wako Works of Art, Tokyo "Through creating situations with a simple set of instructions, the artists play with social customs and allow instinctive human reactions to be observed in their plainest form." - Platform, Seoul
