Come join SFAI for an appearance by acclaimed Mexican artist Teresa Margolles. Teresa Margolles' work revolves around what is perhaps the last great taboo topic of our time: death. Her approach is even more daring, for she is not interested in folklore and ritual but in the palpable reality of the corpse. Employing a minimalist aesthetic, she renders extinguished life perceptible through artistic intervention, thereby rescuing “her” decedents from anonymous oblivion. Margolles is featured in Disponible–a kind of Mexican Show at SFAI’s Walter and McBean Galleries, running February 10-March 26, 2011. Cuauhtémoc Medina is an art critic, curator, and historian who lives and works in Mexico City. He holds a PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of Essex, UK. Medina is a researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas at the National University of Mexico, and was the first Associate Curator of Latin American Art Collections at Tate Modern in London.
