Between New Moons Heidi Norton
Opening Reception 7-10p, Saturday February 12 HungryMan Gallery presents the photographic and sculptural work of Chicago based artist Heidi Norton in the exhibition entitled, Between New Moons. Her photographic studio constructs utilize plexiglass and wood shelves, plants and other objects representational of the universal new age culture of the 60’s and 70’s. These works engage in a conversation between still life, photography, sculpture, and painting that is intended to reexamine the traditional ideas of beauty through contemporary and conceptual methods. Her photographs are accompanied by her first venture into sculptural work, which compliment her ongoing play with distortion of space while bringing focus to the materiality of her work as a whole. Norton creates a perceptual shift where open is closed and chaotic is clean. Heidi Norton, originally from Baltimore, MD received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002. Her work has been exhibited all over Chicago in venues such as Monique Meloche Gallery, Dominican University, Northern Illinois University Gallery, and Andrew Rafacz Gallery. Nationally and internationally, her work has been exhibited in Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles, London and Valenica, Spain. Norton was recently awarded an artist residency at ACRE in Wisconsin, in which she completed during August 2010. She was included in the group show “Landscape, Portrait, Still Life” curated by Philip von Zweck at HungryMan Gallery in March 2010. Open Saturdays and Sundays 12-5p Concurrently, HungryMan Chicago is showing Frank Piatek and Judith Geichman, Dana Degiulio and Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, Samantha Bittman and Mike Nudelman as well as Amber Thomas and Josh Reames in the exhibition, A Coupling, curated by Josh Reames.
