MNEME
A group show of YouTube clips chosen by artists/curators/musicians plus selections made live and via the Facebook event page (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=193461694003372)
February 4th 7-10pm
Organized by Aaron Harbour and Jackie Im
The basis of the show revolves around three ideas:
1. The notion that picking YouTube clips is a form of art making or curation - ripe with the possiblity of reflection. The collection of clips may enable a creation of a narrative and even act as a form of self portraiture.
2. Ideas on how media is being accessed. The use of the internet - transferring the role of the authority from studios or larger companies choosing what we see (via theatres, television channels, or radio stations) to friends, family and trusted blogs dissemenating information. This is not to suggest a sort of media utopia or that corporate interests are not intertwined in this new landscape, but that the access points are more spread out.
3. Examining the control of copyright and media dissemination and the idea of these becoming less and less centralized and in some cases, less and less existant. Sites such as youtube have made formerly too obscure, too exclusive, or non-professionally produced materials available. Short clips passed via facebook are as likely to spark conversation as a full scale movie, or a book.
