Artists Yvonne Rainer and Anna Sew Hoy will explore issues of experimentation and daily practice, materiality, the viewer, and the body in relation to their own work and the art of Eva Hesse in a wide-ranging conversation moderated by art historian Julia Bryan-Wilson.
Dancer, choreographer, performer, filmmaker, and writer Yvonne Rainer cofounded the Judson Dance Theater in 1962, initiating a vital, experimental movement in modern dance. In 1968 she began to integrate short films into her live performances, eventually leaving dance to produce and direct feature-length films. She returned to dance in 2000 via choreography commissions for the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation’s White Oak Dance Project. Rainer teaches in the Studio Art Department at UC Irvine.
Los Angeles–based artist Anna Sew Hoy is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Bard College M.F.A. Program. Her strikingly varied body of sculptural work combines improvisational methods with familiar, mundane materials. In some pieces, expertly made ceramic forms are intertwined with fabrics, metal elements, wood, rubber, and mirrors; a recent collaborative project with artist Eve Fowler incorporates photography. Sew Hoy’s work has been showcased in solo exhibitions across the United States and in numerous group shows nationally and internationally.
Julia Bryan-Wilson is associate professor in the Department of Art History and the Program in Visual Studies at UC Irvine, and the author of two books and numerous articles. Her areas of research expertise include contemporary art, feminist and queer theory, craft history and theory, performance, and artistic activism.
