New Paintings Alex Couwenberg, Ray Ban, acrylic on canvas, 66 x 96
Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 5:30 - 7:30 PM “My painting are a product of my obsession over process. Applying paint to a surface and the experiences that while creating an image are the purest form of motivation.” -– Alex Couwenberg Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition for Alex Couwenberg opening Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Born and raised in Los Angeles and Orange County, Alex is influenced by his appreciation of the aesthetic associated with the Southern California Culture, i.e. hot rods and custom cars, mid-century design, and the surf and skateboard culture. Couwenberg’s paintings diagram the process of paint application and the interpretation of how these influences manifest themselves in the form of shape, color, texture, and space. With consideration to geometry and placement of form within the composition, Couwenberg creates a relationship between balance, tension and harmony, keeping precise control of medium and image. California artist Alex Couwenberg received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and his MFA from Claremont Graduate School. In 2007, Couwenberg won the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and has shown extensively throughout California and the United States. Andrea Schwartz Gallery was established in 1982 and is located in the South of Market district of San Francisco. ASG exhibits contemporary work of emerging to mid-career artists from the Bay Area and across the country. ASG is a member of SFADA. Gallery Hours are Monday - Friday 9 - 5, Saturday 1 – 5.
