Dee Hibbert-Jones & Nomi Talisman, "I-140," 2009.

Reception Wednesday, February 16, 4-7 PM "Dislocated" explores the conflict between where we live out our lives by necessity and where we are located politically. Featured work was created by Lebanese-American and Afghan-German artists in Jerusalem, Israeli and English-American artists in San Francisco and an American Jewish artist in the West Bank. Youmna Chlala and Jeanno Gaussi were invited to live and work in an apartment in Jerusalem registered to a Palestinian woman, whose ability to work in Israel depends on her residency there but whose husband and home life are restricted to the West Bank. Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman turned the multi-year ordeal of Talisman's quest for permanent residency in San Francisco (denied her as the lesbian partner of a naturalized citizen) into artworks rooted in their feelings of powerlessness and frustration. Katie Miranda processed her experiences volunteering with Palestinian children in the West Bank through paintings, sketches and political cartoons that speak to the cruelty of their situation and the humanity of those affected. Each of these projects is made with love and care, as a bulwark against institutional indifference to human needs and desires. Gallery hours Tues-Sat 12-5 PM
