The Queen’s Croquet Ground Topher Delaney, Taiho Rock, oil on paper, 99" (8'3") x 51" (4'3"), 2010
Don Soker Contemporary Art is pleased to announce The Queen’s Croquet Ground a solo exhibition of works in multiple mediums by the artist Topher Delaney showing March 3 – April 16. Opening reception is March 3 from 5 – 8 pm. ARTIST STATEMENT FOR THE QUEEN’S CROQUET GROUND: Reflecting on these mediums, Ms. Delaney comments, “these multiple mediums of representations are grounded in the continuing articulation of visual patterned codes. This lexicon of transcriptions is communicated through conceptual allusions + illusions to...linguistic conundrums: Suspended Braille, cyclic myths of creation + dissolution, Genesis on the Rocks, the intersections of constructed nature with the vestiges of the wild, Precious Little: Consider the Squirrel / The Edge Effect, altered states of appearance, Stamen + Pistol / Dirty Weapons / Little People on a Big Scale, the material manipulation of boundaries referencing cross cultural mashups of literature + fine art + functional art, Vessels of Texting/ Opening Gate...” ARTIST STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY: The genesis + focus of the artist, Topher Delaney’s, forty year career is a continuing process of investigations of the ontology of art in reflecting upon cultural categorizations + the nature of relationships which evolve from the intersections of applied arts + fine arts. Ontology in this case offers us a map of reality through permeable categorizations of multiple mediums of aesthetic expression. Of particular interest to Ms. Delaney are the judgments of sentiments + taste defined through the aesthetics of social + cultural values + the ensuing financial value indexes of aesthetics as durable “goods” to be acquired + traded through specialized markets of commerce. Central to the critical practice of Ms. Delaney are the installations grounding (literally) within the context of constructed nature, in the landscape (communal / non specific) or gardens (personal / specific)... The nature of such installations is the implicit ephemeral quality of the four elements in mediation with constructed mediums of built forms. Of particular interest to Ms. Delaney is the fact that these installations + the experience of these interventions embedded within the structure of nature, are not transferable as a commodity of exchange. The transference of exchange, if there to be one, is a continuum of empiricism + cultural memory, in the immediacy of the experiential context of a specific site. The “take away” for the viewer/ participant is an engagement with our specific memory of our own personal order of the universe. This current exhibition draws inspiration from the study of metaphysics in structured discrete forms of aesthetics as durable goods. All evidence of natural phenomena is offered for sale as “take away.” For an ongoing list of events during the exhibition please visit: http://www.tdelaney.com/events.html
