Film screening: El General Video still: El General (2009)
Filmmaker Natalia Almada has inherited a unique legacy entangled with Mexico’s tumultuous history: she is the great-granddaughter of Mexican president Plutarco Elias Calles (1924-1928), one of Mexico’s most controversial revolutionary figures. Calles was accused of being a ‘Dictator,’ ‘Iron Man,’ and ‘Nun-Burner,’ yet is also acclaimed as the ‘father of modern Mexico.’ Almada's film "El General" is a portrait of a family and a country under the shadow of the past, and earned her the Documentary Directing Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The screening is part of "Disponible—a kind of Mexican show," at SFAI's Walter and McBean Galleries through March 26.
