Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Elliott Hundley "Blinded," 2009
Elliott Hundley has re-imagined the aesthetics of assemblage. His works are composed as webs of interconnections—collaged and pinned photographs, fabric, bits of text—that result in fragmented, exquisitely detailed surfaces. This emphasis on the material process creates a formal tension, yet his works are also rich in content, drawing on mythology and Greek tragedy. Hundley’s own personal and symbolic worlds combine with contemporary and ancient cultural references to weave an epic visual narrative that unfolds on the multiple layers of his work. Hundley studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and UCLA. In 2006, he had his first solo exhibition at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and will be the subject of another this fall at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. Hundley’s work is included in several museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Hundley's work is included in the group exhibition, "The More Things Change" at SFMOMA through November 6, 2011. The lecture is free and open to the public. San Francisco Art Institute, Lecture Hall 800 Chestnut Street San Francisco, CA 94133 Hundley is a Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Interdisciplinary Painting Practices
