First Solo Show of Mixed Media Artist Michelle Tan Approaches the Subject of Plutocracy and Class Struggle from a Personal Anthology San Francisco, CA (February 28, 2011) – The first solo exhibition of mixed media artist Michelle Tan tackles the topic of political upheaval and socio-economic inequity from a personal viewpoint, as a former participant of mass demonstrations in the Philippines and a critical observer of current uprisings in the Arab world. Featuring a portfolio of paintings and works on paper, the artist uses sparing composition and simplified forms, which allow the work to exist on its own, removed from its original time and place and detached from revolutionary and theoretical notions. The exhibit will be on view from March 5 through March 19, 2011. A closing reception will be held on March 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. About the Artist Michelle was born and raised in Manila and participated in student demonstrations against Marcos and onerous World Bank-IMF monetary policies in the eighties. No stranger to violence, she witnessed all the coup attempts in close proximity when she lived in a military base with her family. Her interest in politics and empathy towards the workers movement began when she volunteered at the funeral of assassinated student leader, Lean Alejandro. After graduation, Michelle traveled extensively throughout Asia and has lived in Jakarta (Indonesia), Toronto (Canada), and Florence (Italy). She currently lives in San Francisco. After twenty years of corporate life, she decided to pursue formal postgraduate studies in fine art. She has studied at San Francisco Studio School and the Toronto School of Art, and was recently granted a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Visual Arts by the University of California, Berkeley Extension.
