Listen With Your Eyes Rolph Scarlett - Plexus - c. 1948
Weinstein Gallery is pleased to present the first comprehensive exhibition of the painting of Rolph Scarlett, one of the unique lights of twentieth-century abstract painting. With work from 1918 to 1969, this retrospective shows the breadth of Scarlett’s oeuvre and proves his place at the artistic zeitgeist over five decades. Once touted as the most important North American non-objective painter, whose work was collected extensively by Solomon Guggenheim, Scarlett’s work languished in obscurity when Rebay was forced out of the Museum of Non-Objective Painting and its mission was changed. Yet, Scarlett never stopped working, and remained true to his unique sense of color, form, and abstraction. To create something that had never existed before: this was Scarlett’s great cause. This retrospective exhibition shows Scarlett for the true adventurer he was, steadily and creatively seeking out the pathways of abstract painting in all its guises and adding to its meaning in personal and profound ways. Please join us for this important exhibition, opening March 26th, at the gallery’s 301 Geary location, at the corner of Powell Street, right on Union Square, from 6 to 9 pm. Preceding the opening, art historian and curator Judith Nasby will give a lecture about Scarlett’s life and work at 4 pm.
