Book Release Party with Dodie Bellamy and Kevin Killian "the buddhist" cover image
Join SF Camerawork for a special evening celebrating the release of two new books by two very talented writers, Dodie Bellamy and Kevin Killian. Author of "the buddhist," Bellamy’s newest venture was published through Allone Editions of the Publication Studio and was designed by Wayne Smith and handmade by SF Camerawork’s artist-in-residence Colter Jacobsen. While ending an affair with a Buddhist teacher, Dodie Bellamy wrote about it simultaneously on her blog, in an experiment in writing through states of extremis, exploring nuances of public shame, the vagaries of desire and rage, and her confusion over the authenticity of group and individual spirituality. Her book becomes a celebration of marginalized subjectivity as enacted in the work of female artists from Frida Kahlo and Bessie Smith to Eva Hesse and Carolee Schneeman, to Bhanu Kapil and Ariana Reines. This volume contains the essence of the blog, as well as more extended narratives too explicit to post online. Following a sold out "Volume One," Kevin Killian brings forth "Volume Two of Selected Amazon Reviews". Edited by poet Jason Morris, "Volume Two" features a higher percentage of “serious” reviews than "Volume One," which showcased the surreal and carnivalesque. Killian understood that on Amazon, everything’s for sale, and everyone’s an unpaid content provider. However, as he discovered, you can also say almost exactly what you want, chip away at the machine, and maybe do it some harm. Free to the public
