The Situationist Critique of Art and Urbanism with guest speaker Ken Knabb
The San Francisco Art Institute's Urban Studies program welcomes writer, translator, and social theorist Ken Knabb to speak about the Situationists, whose ideas remain influential among artists and scholars, as well as in the tactics and aspirations of rebels around the world. Attendance is free and open to the public. Ken Knabb is one of America’s leading experts on the Situationists. Though best known for his meticulous translations of Guy Debord and the Situationist International, he is also a penetrating and original author in his own right. His shorter works include leaflets and articles on Wilhelm Reich, Georges Brassens, Gary Snyder, the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the 1991 Gulf War, and the 2006 anti-CPE revolt in France. Longer works include The Relevance of Rexroth, Gateway to the Vast Realms, Confessions of a Mild-Mannered Enemy of the State, and The Joy of Revolution. Like the Situationists before him, Knabb has for decades refused numerous requests to take part in interviews, conferences, book signings, and other public appearances. More recently, he has decided to foster discussion of Situationist ideas through select speaking engagements; he has appeared at showings of Guy Debord's films and he gave a talk to a packed audience at City Lights Books. This appearance at SFAI is another rare exception. More information about Ken Knabb and the Situationist International can be found at his “Bureau of Public Secrets” website: http://www.bopsecrets.org
