Performing Politics: An Afternoon of Performance and Discussion
Art Practical is excited to host afternoon of performance and conversation at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Performing Politics will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, May 8, in the Yud Gallery. This program is in conjunction with Art Practical’s thematic issue “Performance: the Body Politic,” which profiles artists who have used performance to foreground and contest national, racial, gendered, and sexual identities, as well as the mediated and politicized frameworks that surround these identities. Performing Politics will explore similar ideas through an experiential understanding of how the body can act as a site for transformation, not only for the performer as an individual, but for an audience as well. Performing Politics investigates the capabilities that performance art has as a platform that enables audiences to recognize or situate themselves in unfamiliar circumstances. Performances by Bay Area–based artists Ana Teresa Fernandez, Philip Huang, Julio César Morales, and Wafaa Yasin will be followed by a conversation with the audience moderated by artist Allan deSouza. Matthew Harrison Tedford, guest editor for “Performance: the Body Politic,” will introduce the event. ADMISSION: FREE with regular admission of $5. Youth 18 and under free.
