Glue Kaori Takamura, Typerwriter Keys, mixed media and acrylic on canvas, 35 x 54 inches
Opening Reception: Wednesday, May 4, 2011, 5:30 - 7:30 PM Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition featuring new work by Mary Ijichi, Barbara Kronlins, Gary Nisbet and Kaori Takamura with an opening reception held on Wednesday, May 4 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. “It is my hope that we all be given a chance to express our full potential.” --Mary Ijichi For this series, Mary Ijichi was inspired by the unique vision and compulsive drive of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Kusama, who suffered from mental illness, had an ability to tolerate long periods of tedious and repetitive work. For Ijichi, Kusama exemplifies her philosophy about everyone’s capacity to contribute to society. “I strive for a formal yet free-floating pattern that defines itself, and refers only to itself.” --Barbara Kronlins Barbara Kronlins creates multi-layered collages using vintage matchbooks and coloring books, flashcards, and sheet music. She paints, stains, and deconstructs the materials to create vibrant and playful compositions. “I explore themes that revolve around growth and nurture, cycles of life and family.” --Gary Nisbet Gary Nisbet creates mixed media collages that embody themes from domestic life. Chairs, kitchen tables, books and more combine whimsical compositions that explore the notions of life and family. “I try to communicate with viewers the quiet floundering-like emotions experienced through the decisions made on life’s journey” --Kaori Takamura Kaori Takamura’s unique style mixes acrylic on canvas with machine stitched colored threads that reference her Japanese heritage and experience as a package designer. Her paintings are composed of simple and symbolic layers that represent the process by which one builds life experience.
