Fragments from Burro-Cracia BURRO-CRACIA
Z Space is excited to announce the next show in our gallery: Artwork by Victor Cartagena: Fragments from BURRO-CRACIA: a mural installation on paper (work in progress) and ANATOMY OF LA MENTIRA BURRO-CRACIA is a play on words (Burro in Spanish means donkey and Burocracia, with one “r,” means Bureaucracy), so the combination of words represents a critique of bureaucratic inefficiencies and the politics that drive them, with human beings and their quest for power acting as the engines of the system. This is a work in progress and the final mural is scheduled to be presented in Cuba in December, 2011. Also on display are pieces from ANATOMY OF LA MENTIRA, a series of work first created and exhibited a few years ago. The series explores the nature of lying and the reasons that humans are continually compelled to lie. Cartagena states, “lying, like laughing, is a human trait . . . There have never been as many lies as in these times.” ABOUT VICTOR CARTAGENA: Salvadoran-born Victor Cartagena has been making art in the Bay Area since the late 1980s. Cartagena’s early work battled with memories of the violence in El Salvador and the pain and separation that he experienced in relocating to the United States. His work later moved beyond solely articulating the immigrant experience, and transitioned to focus on more universal themes. His work often includes deep exploration of the body politic, issues of consumer culture, material waste, homelessness, violence and identity in the 21st Century and has dealt with themes of exile, identity, perception and the use of power. Originally recognized as a printmaker, his artistic palette has now branched out to include sculpture, audio and video installation and performance art work, and most recently, set design. Cartagena is also a founding member of the group SECOS Y MOJADOS, a San Francisco based collective focusing on immigrant narratives and the exploration of interdisciplinary performance. Cartagena has exhibited at numerous galleries and museums locally and worldwide and his work is in several private and institutional collections. Opening Reception: Friday April 15, 2011, 6 – 8 pm Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 1 – 5 pm Free and open to the public
