This series of vintage erotica moves beyond mere entertainment to investigate both the fantasies and realities of sexual representation – that uncomfortable space where we so often find a huge gap. The slick, erotic daydream of celebrated director Radley Metzger’s Camille 2000 goes head-to-head against the gritty reality of the porn documentary A Labor of Love, making the difference all the more stark. We close the series with The Wild Pussycat, a bizarre masterpiece that combines erotic scenes with sadism – but somehow becomes an intense, unintentional black comedy instead of a just another crappy 60s sexploitation picture. Combined, the three films illustrate some of the perils and positives of depicting sex, and raise questions about how, or if, anything has ultimately changed. Stay tuned for ‘Three-Way Redux: A Trilogy of Contemporary Erotica,’ coming soon. Camille 2000 By Radley Metzger Thu, May 19 & Sat, May 21, 7:30pm Softcore sexploitation at its most stylish and sophisticated. Armand is a suave bachelor new to Rome, and gorgeous Marguerite is the prize catch of high society. Armand decides he must have her, but she is full of dark secrets... Camille 2000 has it all; delightfully retro costumes, kinky orgies, lavish palaces, champagne, ultra-cool cinematography, and a funky lounge score by cult composer Piero Piccioni. (1969, 115 min, 35mm) A Labor of Love By Robert Flaxman & Dan Goldman Fri, May 20, 7:30pm & Sun, May 22, 2pm An extremely rare documentary on the first and only hardcore feature film made in Chicago, A Labor of Love is just as much a chronicle of low-budget filmmaking as it is a study of the personal conflicts which come into play during the creation of a piece of "pornography," and the social mores which are violated. As the actors and crew members are interviewed, the filmmakers weave an intricate tableau of how those involved are both bonded and disheartened. (1976, 72 min, 16mm) “…captures exactly what pornography cannot permit: the human reality of the sexual experience.” – Roger Ebert The Greatest Film Ever Made? The Wild Pussycat By Dimis Dadiras Thu, May 26, 7:30pm We showed this film in May 2007, and everyone who was there (including YBCA’s Executive Director) will never forget it. A plot summary would sound insane. Let’s just say it’s the sick (and completely hilarious) story of a woman who takes revenge on her abusive, lecherous boyfriend. Sit back, say goodbye to sanity, and allow The Wild Pussycat to sink its claws into your soul.
