El Grito de la Mision: Opening, Celebration, and BBQ
Location: Southern Exposure FREE and open to the public Join SoEx's Artists in Education Program at the 13th Annual Mission Voices Summer (MVS) exhibition and Grito de la Mision. El Grito de la Mision is an opening celebration featuring explorations and experimentations of the theme INsight OUT in the form of a youth created exhibition. Join Mission Voices artists and youth in interactive art projects including a zine making booth, Ojo de Dios booth and face painting. INsight OUT reveals layers of the self, from looking inside out, and outside in. Participants tackle the issues of stereotypes and individuality through photography, installation, silk screening, sculpture, drawing, mapping, model-making, painting, collage, and sound engineering. On view is an interactive large-scale installation, sound booth, photography, prints, painting, works on paper and much more. Mission Voices Summer is a six-week intensive program (July 9 - August 18, 2008) that gives youth the opportunity to exercise leadership skills and participate in their community by exploring relevant social and personal issues through visual arts workshops. The program focuses on arts-based community development by pairing local artists with youth and teaches them to use the visual arts as a tool to express their creative voices and to make a visual statement about their ideas, interests, and ambitions that result in a final project presented to the community.
