A Thousand Words
A Thousand Words, a solo exhibition of work by Jennifer Maria Harris, will take place at a.Muse Gallery at 614 Alabama Street in San Francisco from August 9 - September 7, 2008. Admission is free. There will be a public reception with the artist on Saturday, August 9, from 7 - 10 p.m. In paintings, prints, and installation, the exhibition explores the power and influence of the stories that surround us, from nursery rhymes to contemporary news articles. The installation includes Fear Not Radio, with the voices of hundreds of participants, ranging in age from 2 to 82, and in more than ten different languages, saying “Don’t be afraid,” with sound design by John Given. More information about Fear Not Radio, including how to participate, can be found at www.fearnotproject.com or 1-888-363-2332 (1-888-END2FEAR). The installation also includes the Fear Not Library, which consists of 18 of the best-selling books of all time (including the Bible, the Koran, Harry Potter, etc.), each of which has been altered, with all the words whited out except for “fear not” or similar messages. At the reception, visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in Fear Not Indirect Mail, in which their handwritten messages will be distributed in the community as magnetized anti-fear advertisements. The exhibition also includes a series of prints, Primer, that uses simplified silhouettes of everyday animals and objects as a background for text from contemporary news articles, with the text then redacted to spell out nursery rhymes; and a series of paintings, Passage, which incorporates imagery reminiscent of children's stories to create symbolic and often complex spaces. The reception will also include a special performance by art-rock vocalist Bernadette. Bernadette is one of the co-founders of WomenROCK and has played at many of San Francisco’s finest clubs, including The Fillmore, The Boom Boom Room, Slim’s, Café DuNord, and Bottom of the Hill, as well as at festivals around the Bay. New at the closing reception: Fear Not Indirect Mail messages that were received during the exhibition have been placed around town and photos of them will be on display.
