Regard Robert Kipniss Chair & Plant
Weinstein Gallery is pleased to present Robert Kipniss: Regard, a 60th-anniversary celebration of the artist’s first solo exhibition of 1951. This exhibition features paintings made by the artist in the last two years, as he approached and then turned 80 year old. Since that auspicious beginning—the gallery exhibition took place in 1951 on 57th Street in the heart of New York’s art world, and the new center of the art world following World War II—Kipniss has painted almost daily to fulfill the promise of that first beginning. Kipniss is the master of variation within a form of his own devising. He purposely limits his palette, his subject matter, in order to probe into the matter of painting itself… and into what it means to be a working painter for more than 60 years. The answer can be found in this astonishing new body of work, where yellows shock, trees dissect, and green hills seem to roll into infinite space. There is also a gentle beauty to these recent paintings, a return to the lyricism of Kipniss’s earliest works. The exhibition will also include three important works that were part of his 2006 New Orleans Museum of Art retrospective. Weinstein Gallery invites you to share in this wonderful celebration with this complex and fascinating artist. Join us in welcoming Mr. Kipniss from his home in the Hudson Valley of New York for the gala opening on June 11, 2011, from 6-9 pm.
