Reception July 1, 6-9pm Christopher Nickel is fascinated by the powerful constructive and deconstructive forces of both man and nature. His imagery often juxtaposes man’s urge to build and control, with nature’s inevitable erosive transformation of the built environment. In so doing, these images of course also beg the question of whether man’s creations are improvements or a destruction of nature’s own creations. In his Horizons series, Nickel focuses on the power of the horizon line both as metaphor for the moment where two disparate elements adjoin, and as a powerful formal anchor that yields an image that is both abstract and specific. Using scale, texture, composition, and light, Nickel renders images of nothing (often just empty spaces) as emotional and monumental. Exhibition Dates: Thursday June 30th–Saturday, July 30th
