Kala Fellowship Artists’ Talk Genevieve Quick
Kala’s Fellowship program includes an annual series of artist talks presented by current Fellows during their studio residencies. Kala’s nine Fellows for 2010-2011 were selected by Kala Directors in association with juror Jens Hoffman, Director of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art at California College of the Arts. This is the second talk in the series that will be presented over the next several months. The talk is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Jessica Ingram has traveled throughout the southern United States photographing many seemingly benign locations. These often unimpressive locations are in fact the sites where horrific Civil Rights era atrocities, Klan activities, and slave trade had previously occurred. Jessica's work has been presented at the Oakland Museum, the New York Photo Festival, SF Camerawork, Newark Museum and USC's Fisher Museum of Art. She attended New York University and received her MFA from California College of the Arts. Genevieve Quick's work draws on the history of image making and viewing devices from the Victorian period to contemporary technology involving satellites and space telescopes. With the skills of an architectural model-maker, Genevieve masterfully constructs viewing devices from simple foam-core. These sculptures are often accompanied by highly technical drawings and photographs. Her work has been presented at Southern Exposure, The Lab, Villa Montalvo and Headlands Center for the Arts. Genevieve received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute and has had residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo and Djerassi.
