It’s Never Too Late to Have a Happy Childhood Munakata, Maypole 5 high
Reception: June 18, 2011 3:00-5:00 pm Grace Munakata uses abstraction as a personal tool to juxtapose her Japanese-American cultural heritage. By working simultaneously with paint and collage, distinct pictorial languages intersect and diverge in Munakata's canvases. An abstract forest of color and pattern may disclose figures or animals, symbolizing in Munakata's work that childhood can coexist with the present. Like millions of Americans, Aaron Petersen struggles with the inequalities of wealth distribution and how to visually depict this phenomenon. In his new work, Petersen physically deconstructs his paintings into ribbons and scraps, speaking to the fragmented nature of today's economy and the inherent potential of physical and social reconstruction. Grace Munakata received her MFA from the University of California at Davis. She is a Professor of Art at California State University, East Bay. Aaron Petersen graduated from the California College of Arts, San Francisco, California.
