Permutae by Mary Franck and Finley Coyl / Reception by Tessa Wills
Mary Franck, Finley Coyl and Tessa Wills are new artists in the Bay area queer performance scene that is crystallizing. Tessa Wills and ‘reception’ performers Harold Burns and Honey McMoney were recently represented as lead characters in the community on the cover of the SF Bay Guardian (Outside and Inside.12th April 2011). Permutae reveals ever-shifting boundaries of embodiment towards greater agency and manifest desire. Reception unravels the impulse of extravagance towards revolting nature laid bare. The artists have pulled together a strong team of ten performers to create this double bill of individual and complementary new work. Both pieces stutter and seduce the audience into the functions of the body through movement. As Reception strips away social norms revealing intimacy through regression, agression and play, Permutae densely immerses and swallows the performative bodies in chimerical imagery, only to spit them back out in stark and shifting form. The works are as complicated as they are breathtakingly beautiful, entangling performers in an exploration of humanity. Reception invites the experience of deliciously shameful delight around the functions of the body. Permutae poses questions of ownership, generation and desire on an ever-expanding technological horizon. Both projects, made with a queer eye, are directly concerned with breaching, travelling through, piercing, or getting past boundaries and set identities. The projects are not utopic - instead of being resolution focused, they are bringing things from darkness into the light, staging desires even as they are shown to be broken, perverted, and held in the awkwardness of that reality.
