Our things in our hands must be equals, comrades... ! Alexander Rodchenko, Paris, 1925. In a materialistic culture there is a gap between process and material. The relationship between the producer and the consumer is veiled. Material objects are fetishized as exchange-value is emphasized over use-value and the market fills the gap with new desires and identities, provided by the shiny new “things in our hands…” Beyond materialistic, Pieces-of-you-topia, featuring Mel Day, Miriam Dym, Lucas Murgida, Kelly Lynn Jones, Natasha Wheat and WWAWUT, is a collaborative exhibition and residency project, exploring a new kind of materialism, one that reconsiders the economic, ecological, physical and spiritual relationship we all have with objects and our material world. Revealing the dialogue between things and people the projects these artists will undertake explore a range of human and non-human relationships exposing growing dissonance and deepening connections. Between August 9 - 27 a series of residencies will occur within the LAB. Artists will conduct public presentations in varying formats ranging from performance, dance, installation and/or artist talk. In addition to public events, the LAB will be open during regular hours and the public is invited into the main gallery to observe the artists’ process. Participating Artists Mel Day will present the new Center for Experimental Contemplatives (CexC) designed to help mediate challenges, multi-sensory possibilities, and contemplative opportunities between objects, objects-in-process, and their makers. Miriam Dym will work to make commercial packaging for select products and choice detritus that emerges from her own and other artists’ efforts while working with WWAWUT to make dancers uniforms. Kelly Lynn Jones will construct a physical “store” of the objects she obsesses over on the internet. She will explore ideas around materialistic consumption in both the personal and universal realm, relating specifically within the online platform. Lucas Murgida will construct, trap himself inside, and then escape from a wooden safe over the course of several hours. 8/21. Natasha Wheat will be investigating desire through repositioning living forms in the exhibition space. WWAWUT will present Pieces-of-you-topia, an interdisciplinary dance performance about the evolution of an object. 8/13 and 8/26.
