South Dakota Rising? Opportunities for Artists in Declining Towns
667 Shotwell and Beautiful Possibility Present: SOUTH DAKOTA Rising? Opportunities for Artists in Declining Towns A Presentation and Conversation with Lawrence Diggs, aka The Vinegar Man Slideshow at 7:30 In 1989 Lawrence Diggs bought a house in Roslyn, South Dakota (pop. 250) expecting to use it for a quiet place to write. But the community was so welcoming, he moved there. With their encouragement and support he founded the International Vinegar Museum and International Vinegar Festival and literally put the town on the map. He became president of the South Dakota Specialty Producers Association, is actively involved with various artist organizations and artistic activities, and has written three books that reflect his do-it-yourself (and anywhere!) attitude. Lawrence sees great opportunities for artists in shrinking towns. He would like to begin a conversation with artists who can see possibilities and opportunities where others see desolation and despair. Lawrence will present a slide presentation and discuss his work with small towns across South Dakota and how those towns are looking for things to bring life back into their communities. Topics of discussion will include: the need for art economies for revitalization and growth and how this can turn into funding for artist's projects; how young energy can be harnessed to make innovative and creative artistic communities; and the still viable but rapidly declining buildings ranging from homes to schools to churches across the state that represent “fresh wall” for artist looking for opportunities for expression or creative activism. Come meet Lawrence Diggs and let’s have a conversation.
