Vertical Hold Oppenheimer's Eye by Iva Gueorguieva
Artist Reception: Friday, September 9, 6-8 PM Electric Works is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Iva Gueorguieva and Julie Weitz. These two accomplished artists have combined forces to distill an exciting exhibition that will engage the viewer—asking that we take a better look at ourselves in relation to the world in which we live. Gueorguieva has received international acclaim for her paintings that combine a chaotic whirlwind of paint with the figurative anchor of the recognizable. Her new body of work produced for Electric Works showcases her facility to pair the emotional with a lush palate. The large, colorful gestures she paints are coupled with a variety of techniques including the collaging to paper, muslin and other materials which add to the complex layered strategy she employs for this exuberant work. Her trademark abstract mark making mixed with figurative forms have become an arena for the lively beauty that she controls with consummate skill. In eight new works, Gueorguieva brings a sense of organization to chaos while providing the viewer an opportunity to travel along paths and streams of visual metaphor. Iva Gueorguieva was born in Bulgaria and lives and works in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She resides in Los Angeles and teaches painting and drawing at UCLA. This is her third exhibition with Electric Works. Recent solo shows include Ameringer McEnery Yohe, New York; Bravin Lee Programs, New York; Lux Art Institute, Encinitas, CA; Angles Gallery, Los Angeles; Stichting Outline, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Pomona Museum of Art, Claremont, CA; and 2x2 Projects, Amsterdam, NL. Notable group shows include, among others, the Contemporary Art Museum at The University of South Florida, Tampa, FL; Pasadena Museum of Art, Pasadena, CA; Galerie Lelong, New York, NY; Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Dallas, TX; and The 2003 Louisiana Biennial at the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, LA. She is the recipient of the California Community Foundation mid-career Arts fellowship for 2010 and the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant for 2006-07. Her work resides in the public collections of the Minneapolis Art Institute, The von Liebig Art Center among other institutions. Julie Weitz combines painting, drawing, collage and video to address the complex and entangled ways in which we picture others and ourselves. Electric Works will feature three bodies of work during this exhibition. Eyes peer out of vibrant, colorful masks painted life-size call to mind camouflage, make-up and "game-faces" that we put on everyday to go about our lives. Eyes are also put to use in a series of prints of adornments to the human body. Finally a single-channel video piece gets up close and personal with the human form—close enough that it arrives at abstraction at some points. Weitz received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Weitz was born in Chicago and currently lives and works in Cleveland. She has recently shown work at the Marc Chagall Museum, Vitebsk, Belarus; Schroeder Romero, New York; and Urban Jealousy 1st International Roaming Biennial of Tehran, at Hafriyat Karakoy, Istanbul, Turkey and Galerie Wallywoods, Berlin. This is her first exhibition with Electric Works.
