Kala Fellowship Artists’ Talk Francesa Pastine, 'Spiderweb #3, Mutual Fund Series,' 2009, cut New York Times page
Kala’s Fellowship program includes an annual series of artists talks presented by Fellows during their studio residencies. This Artists’ Talk will conclude the 2010-2011 series and kick-off our 2011-2012 series. Kala’s nine Fellows for 2010-2011 were selected by Kala Directors in association with juror Jens Hoffman, Director of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art at California College of the Arts. Kala’s 2011-2012 Fellows were selected in association with juror Renny Pritikin, writer, curator, and Director of the Richard L. Nelson Gallery and Fine Arts Collection at the University of California – Davis. The talk is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Renée Gertler/San Francisco, CA Renée Gertler’s work imaginatively explores the relationship between sculpture and photography. Inspired by NASA photography, Renée creates objects from simple materials that are subsequently photographed, recreating the source images based on this new content. The work investigates the slippage between between the photographs and the objects as the line blurs between the two mediums. Renée’s work has been presented at Eleanor Harwood Gallery, Patricia Sweetow Gallery, Romer Young Gallery and Southern Exposure. She attended Harvard, received her MFA from California College of the Arts, and has had residencies at MacDowell and Kohler Arts and Industry. She was also the recipient of a Danish Arts Council Grant. Francesca Pastine/San Francisco, CA Francesca Pastine’s artworks often utilize ArtForum and the New York Times as her material starting point. Her work recontextualizes and subverts these icons of cultural production as she asserts herself into their larger global narratives. Using time intensive and hands-on traditions of paper cutting or obsessive burning with a 9B pencil, her process conflates socio-economic and political conditions with her lived experience. Francesca’s work has been recently exhibited at Eleanor Harwood Gallery, SFMOMA Artists Gallery, and The Headlands Center for The Arts. In addition to the 2011 Kala Fellowship, she received a MFA from San Francisco Arts Institute and has been the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
