Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Amie Siegel Black Moon (still), 2010
Amie Siegel works variously in 16mm and 35mm film, video, sound, and writing. In her multi-channel video and film installations, she reformulates cinematic enterprises—including the establishing shot, the remake, and the tracking shot—as uncanny reflections on absence, historical disorientation, and nostalgia. Her longer form videos and feature films engage spontaneous and scripted spaces, truth and fiction, shifting performance from identification to parody and estrangement. Siegel is currently featured in "East Meets West" in SFAI's Walter and McBean Galleries (http://www.sfai.edu/event/east-meets-west-artadia-awardees-2009), open through September 10, 2011. Her work has been exhibited internationally in venues including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; The Hayward Gallery, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Screening venues include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Berlin International Film Festival; Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley; and the Andy Warhol Museum. Her first book of poetry, "The Waking Life" (North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, CA) was published in 1999. She has been an artist in residence of the DAAD Berliner-Künstlerprogramm and is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship. She teaches in the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. http://www.amiesiegel.net San Francisco Art Institute, Lecture Hall 800 Chestnut Street San Francisco, CA 94133 Free and open to the public
