a.Muse would like to invite you to the opening reception for "Occupied: The Experience of Inhabiting a Body" on October 13th, 6pm - 8.30pm. The show runs from October 6th until November 13th and can be viewed by appointment. This solo exhibition of intricately rendered ink and gouache paintings focuses on what we can know objectively about our anatomy and what it actually feels like to inhabit the human form. The potentially gruesome subject matter is transformed by the artist’s reverence for the body, her delicate hand, as well as her playful use of color. By isolating a particular organ from its place in the body, the artist allows us to see it as distinct from its actual function--to contemplate its aesthetic nature instead. On the page, it is not just a visual experience that arises from this process, but a metaphysical one. The play between chaos and intricately rendered order is at the heart of Willetts’ artistic style, which she achieves by at times allowing ink to run and spill freely over the paper’s surface, and, at other times, drawing intricate lines with obvious intent and precision. The result is a sense that the body parts are not of this world, but are merely floating on the surface of the paper.
